Mixology Group and Brighton Fashion Week

March 21, 2013 in blog, Brighton Fashion Week

Menu design is one of the many jobs we are often tasked with, here at Mixology Group as part of our Consultancy service.

Every client is different; they have varying budgets and some are even tied into certain brand deals. All of which can make it quite challenging sometimes.

Recently we were asked to come up with some cocktails for Brighton Fashion Week. As there are four shows they wanted us to produce one cocktail for each show.

Brighton Fashion Week Cocktail

The Zeitgeist Show – which promotes the newest talents in high-end fashion design. This year their headline designer, Jess Eaton, is famed for her ‘Roadkill Couture’, designs which incorporate animals and feathers that have died of natural causes or were found at the side of the road. For this we decided to stay classical and make a Bloody Mary. The perfect blend of Black Cow Vodka, a roasted red pepper and Heirloom tomato puree and a blend of secret smokey spices.

Flaming Cocktail

Brighton Frocks – This is a more theatrical show focusing on costume designers who work in stage and screen. What better way to introduce some theatre into a cocktail, then by setting it on fire. We went for a delicious drink made with fresh lime juice, blue curacao, Velvet Falernum and Wray & Nephew Jamaican Rum, shaken over ice, then flambéed using some more rum and some cinnamon.

Absinthe Cocktail

The Eco Show – A new show for Brighton Fashion Week, focusing on ethical and sustainable high end fashion. We thought we’d showcase the best way to enjoy Absinthe. Which is to fill a large fountain (or jug) with plenty of ice and slices of fresh lemon and cucumber and top it up with water. Pour a sensible measure of Absinthe into a wine glass together with some cucumber syrup and top it up with some water. Lovely.

Apple Martini Cocktail

The High Street Show – looking at key trends from the British high street. As this show celebrates British high street fashion, we decided to echo this by using only British products. A healthy measure of Williams Chase gin (made in Herefordshire, from apples), Stoneham Springs Sussex Elderflower cordial, Wobble Gate apple juice made in a Sussex and a dash of lemon juice for balance, shaken over ice with a generous sprinkling of a secret ingredient to help it glow.

A year in the life of Mixology Group

January 11, 2013 in News

Since we had time to write our last blog things have gone from strength to strength for us. We started 2012 by opening our very own bespoke bartending school in Brighton. Close to Brighton beach, 10 minutes from the train station and only 40 mins from London.
We now offer courses to bartending enthusiasts, from 2 days train the trainer courses, to the 5 day global bartender certificate.
As we have one of the leading trainers in molecular mixology ‘Myles Cunliffe’ as a Director we also offer training for bartenders in this area.
As well as this we offer consumers a chance to learn the basics with cocktail Masterclasses, molecular Masterclasses and spirit tasting sessions.

2012 also saw us caught up in the excitement of the Olympics. We were lucky enough to be working with Smart Hospitality at the VIP hospitality centre where we had Mixologists on each bar over the 2 weeks. Our bartenders got to serve some of the top athletes as well as their families and friends.

We have also been continuing our mission to involve the bartenders and public of Brighton and now Kingston Upon Thames into the world of cocktails. As well as taking over the running of all of the Brighton food and drink festival bars & Kingston food fest, we have also run our 3 cocktail competitions, the mix off competitions.
We had sponsorship for our Bloody Mary Mix Off from the fabulous Belvedere Vodka, this saw bartenders across town enter recipes for the their own twists on the Bloody Mary and the public, over the course of the month went on the Bloody Mary trail and casted votes for their favourites.

In Kingston we got the local bar staff involved with the help of Havana Especial and had an afternoon in Las Iguanas tasting and judging to find the best bar tender in Kingston.

On a larger scale in August / September we ran the Mix Off in conjunction with Kraken spiced Rum, this saw local bartenders creating videos of their own creations and again the public were able to cast their vote. The 4 finalists were then invited to run their own bar at our Mix Off event at Brighton Sealife Centre, where the public came along to taste cocktails from each bar with drinks made from our 4 sponsors for the night, Kraken Spiced Rum by Havana 8yr, Tuaca and Devils Cut Whisky and vote for the winner.

So what does 2013 hold for us? It promises more eye catching Molecular Events, More fabulous parties for fabulous people and see’s us running our 1st Mix Off Comp of the year on 30th & 31st March!

This week saw Mixology group hold Brighton’s first Molecular Mixology course at their secret hideaway venue in central Brighton. Just a stone’s throw away from the main rail station and tucked away just off the main strip, this contemporary speakeasy is a perfect training space.

Bartenders based in London and around the globe came together as Mixology Group’s own Myles Cunliffe talked them through the basics of the craft. In attendance were delegates from the London Flair Club, including it’s founder – international bar and training consultant Clinton Weir. They were joined by top-flight event and training bartenders working in and around the capital.

The course was extremely successful and all those who made it went away with a sound understanding of the fundamental principles of MM. Caviars, general spherification and reverse method as well as foams, airs and other tips and tricks were all covered in great detail.

The course ran in real time allowing all delegates to experience preparing a range of molecular concoctions from the ground up as though in a real service environment. Those on the course remarked that this is what really made the course, and they ranked it as one of the most useful courses they had attended.

Mixology Group also remain busy on the events circuit, notching up 12 events in the last 10 days. We’ve been cranking out the most delicious cocktails as usual and also providing exciting molecular canapés at top events in London and the South East.

The most exciting events of recent times have been the huge launch of Dom Perignon’s new luminous bottle at One Mayfair, where we served luminous champagne jelly to mimic the bottle and also provided the full bar, working with the-recipe.

Other stormers have been The Butterfly Ball with Peri-Peri Events where Mixology Group again served a range of delicious molecular canapés on beautifully decorated trays, much to the delight of guests. Most recently, we have teamed up with Mustard Catering to deliver some truly inspiring events to star studded crowds. Such Luminaries as David Frost, Lily Cole, Robbie Williams, Jo Whiley and even Sir Paul McCartney to name but a few all had a taste of Mixology Group medicine this week.

Training wise we’ve been out and about in Africa, training the bar teams at New Hilton Hotels in Namibia, and designing training and team-building experiences for hospitality staff in Central London. Coming up we’ve got some more African Adventures and potentially some Whiskey Work in South America too!

Here at MGHQ we are all looking forward to the summer season as it gets into full swing and we hope you are too. Keep your eyes out and ears tuned in to upcoming events and the next few course dates for our wonderful courses in Brighton – coming soon!

Mixology Group at the Observer Food Monthly Awards

December 2, 2010 in About Us, blog, clients, Events, News

Hello Fans! We have been hard at it as you know for weeks now as the Christmas rush takes us in its iron grip. We just got hold of our press clipping from the Observer Food Monthly, where Mixology Group supplied the Bar Staff. This was a really great event to do and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The event was a great success as a combination of top class agencies came to ether to create a truly winning formula. Mixology Group were very proud to take part and who knows, Maybe we could even snag an award for ourselves this time next year!! MG

So What exactly have we been up to then?

November 29, 2010 in blog, News

Well, that is the big question. Obviously the answer is not a lot of blogging or tweeting. With that said, we have been very busy working on some exciting projects for the new year and of course running a lot of events through November and December. Come January we are expecting to unveil our brand new space in Brighton which will become the hub of all things Mixology Group moving forward.

So keep your eyes and ears peeled for an amazing ride through 2011. For now that’s it but there’ll certainly be more to come as we roll on through the next few months.

Time for an update…

September 16, 2010 in blog, the-recipe, updates

Well, here we all are with the very best of intentions – wishing to run our blog seamlessly in-line with our operations and keep all of you lovely people thoroughly up to date with what’s going on for us down here in Brighton and of course where we are running about and what we are doing there. We’re only a couple of weeks in and we are happy to inform you that we have been finding it difficult to jeep up with that mission – because we are just to busy!

So here’s a quick round-up of what we are up to…

We are doing a lot of work at the moment with Funkin, the fruit puree bunch. To be exact, there are ten dates that Mixology Group will be picking up for them across the UK where we’ll be training the lovely staff of the Luminar group in all things cocktail as they take their first steps into a new menu based around the Funkin single serve cocktail pouch range. This is a great range of products which really bring freshness into a whole new dimension, allowing massive venues such as these the opportunity to roll with a bigger and better cocktail menu than ever before. We’ve already met the lovely people in Basildon and Bristol and other joints too, next up are places like Windsor, Plymouth and more.

With that we are continuing our good work with The-Recipe, most excellent london caterers. This weekend will see us take the reigns of the bars at our fourth and fifth events with the fabulous crew from N1. We’ll be mixing drinks at London’s Natural History Museum and back at OneMarylebone for a glamorous party. Here’s to many more!

Finally, we have exciting news brewing with a great bunch of brand all gathered together in a couple of portfolios to make your mouth water – more news on these to come…

’til next time – MG

Advertising Producers Association Show 2010

September 10, 2010 in blog, Events, the-recipe

Last night saw Mixology Group working with The-Recipe again at the Advertising Producers Association’s annual show. The venue was One Marylebone, a stunning old church just near Regent’s Park, which had been decked out with state of the art lighting, audio and video installations and had the underground crypt converted into an amazing nightclub.

Seven bars spread across three floors and the garden space outside kept the drinks flowing well into the evening as seven hundred guests mingled around enjoying delicious Lychee Martinis, Moscow Mules and Brambles, all lovingly crafted by the Mixology Group Team. We’d like to say a big thank you to all of the bartenders and of course the bar-back crew who turned out for the night to make it one to remember.

We’re all looking forward to the next event which is coming up tomorrow in Hackney.
